The fair's board of directors selected the first, second and third place graphic design winners at their October board meeting. There were 64 submissions and all eligible entries were assigned a number for judging. The numbered entries were reviewed by the fair's marketing/promotions committee before the winning entries were picked by the fair board. The entrants' names were not revealed until after the winners were selected.
The top logo features a silhouette of a cowboy riding a bucking horse in the center of the circular design, surrounded by a Ferris Wheel and fairgoers riding a roller coaster with "Saddle Up For Fun" underneath.
Dahlgren will be awarded $500 in prize money, a pair of season passes to the five-day fair. The 2011 theme, "Saddle Up for Fun" was the winner submitted by Karen Arnold of Merced. She received $100 for her winning theme and a pair of season passes to the fair.
Dahlgren grew up in Los Banos, graduated from Los Banos High School and earned an art degree from Cal State Stanislaus. This was the first time he entered the fair?s logo contest, but he won a national logo design contest -- American Corporate Identity -- as well as a Central Valley advertising award, an Addy award, for an ad he designed.
The 2011 contest's second place logo winner is Albert J. Ortega Sr. of Merced. He previously won the fair's logo contest in 2006 with his "Vine-Ripened Fun" design of tomatoes on a roller coaster. Ortega is employed at Quad Graphics in Merced, where he does electronic page layout and ad design for Yellow Pages books. He's looking forward to taking his grandkids, Iris, 4, and Levi Jr., 1, to the fair. Carlos Lupian of Planada, a graphic designer at the Turlock Journal newspaper, took third place honors this year. He also won third place in the 2010 logo design contest. The second and third place winners will each receive a pair of season passes to the fair.
